E. John Ellis diary, 1862-1865.

Collection is comprised of the Civil War memoirs and diary of Ezekiel John Ellis. They are accompanied by a transcript and research manuscript written by Martina Buck Ellis, which present an edited version of the diary and a biography of Ellis. A copy print of a Civil War photograph shows E. John Ellis in his Confederate uniform at Ringgold, Ga. in 1862. Memoirs record events leading up to the Civil War and conclude upon Ellis' arrival at Johnson Island Prison. They describe his political views, the formation of Confederate military forces, battles in Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee, and his capture at Missionary Ridge, Tenn. Diary documents Ellis' daily observations and experiences as a prisoner of war. In a narration of the trip back to Louisiana, he describes the destruction along the Mississippi River. Included is a political speech (ca. 1865) and an incomplete work of fiction concerning a Louisiana planter at the onset of the Civil War (Oct. 1865).
